Greenland Community Primary School is celebrating after being recognised as one of the highest-performing schools in the region, with recent national assessment data placing the school well above national averages.

The school, which is part of SLP, has been lauded for its "Aspiration Without Limit" ethos following a string of successes, including a "Good" with Outstanding features, rating in all areas from Ofsted in April 2025 and exceptional Key Stage 2 results.

Academic Excellence

Recent performance tables have highlighted Greenland as a beacon of academic success. An impressive 75% of pupils met the expected standard in reading, writing, and mathematics—a figure that significantly outstrips the national average of approximately 62%. Furthermore, the school’s average scaled scores in reading and maths reached a remarkable 108, placing them among the top tier of primary schools nationally.

A Culture of Inclusion

Beyond academic statistics, the school has been recognised for its commitment to inclusive education. In May 2024, the school officially opened its pioneering Enhanced Learning Provision (ELP). This purpose-built facility serves children with complex needs across North Durham, providing a nurturing environment that connects indoor learning with the school’s extensive outdoor Forest School areas.

Headteacher Anne-Marie Lewis expressed her pride in the school’s journey:

"We are absolutely thrilled that the hard work of our children, staff, and families is being recognised on a national level. At Greenland, we believe in 'Aspiration Without Limit,' and these results prove that with the right support and a challenging, exciting curriculum, our children can achieve anything. Whether it is through our academic success or the opening of our new Enhanced Learning Provision, our goal remains the same: to ensure every child flourishes."

Ofsted Praise

The most recent Ofsted inspection (April 2025) further validated the school's direction, praising the "Greenland Habits"—kindness, respect, and responsibility—which are embedded in daily life. Inspectors noted that "the teaching of reading is highly effective" and that leaders have successfully created a "culture of high aspiration" that prepares children for the next stage of their education.

Mark Stewart, CEO of SLP, added:

"Greenland Community Primary School continues to go from strength to strength. Their ability to deliver first-class academic results while maintaining a deeply inclusive and caring community atmosphere is a testament to the leadership and dedication of the entire team. They are a credit to the Trust and the Stanley community."
